Business & Vocational NVQ & SVQ Training

What are NVQs/SVQs?

NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications) and SVQs (Scottish Vocational Qualifications) are work-based qualifications that demonstrate competence at work. NVQs are based on national occupational standards (statements of what a competent individual in a given occupation would be expected to be able to do).  Each NVQ/SVQ is made up of a number of units of work, some units are mandatory and others are optional which allow the qualification to be tailored to the needs of the NVQ employer and employee and the relevance to the employee’s individual job role.

How will NVQ/SVQ training benefit my business?

There are a great many benefits to employers including:

  • Employee development in the skills relevant to your business
  • Greater productivity, performance and competitiveness
  • Fully government-funded for eligible learners
  • Increased employee motivation and staff retention
  • Work based qualification – employees learn whilst on the job
  • Keeps employees up-to-date with the latest technology & best practice
  • Qualification benchmarked against national performance standards
  • Work based and on the job learning (no college attendance needed)

How are NVQs/SVQs achieved?

Once enrolled onto an NVQ/SVQ your employee will be required to build up a portfolio of evidence which documents tasks  they have completed within the workplace and suitable to be used as evidence of comptency.  The employee will be allocated a personal assessor who will help them to progress through the qualification and will regularly visit the employee at work every 3 to 4 weeks (at mutually agreed appointments).  The assessor assesses the employee’s knowledge, understanding and makes observations on work-based performance.  NVQ/SVQ units are signed off by the assessor when the employee has successfully demonstrated competence in that particular area.

Throughout the qualification, employees can look at what they have achieved, how much is still left to do and what they need to do to achieve it, until they are assessed as competent for a unit or the whole NVQ/SVQ.  Additional learning where needed can be built into the qualification.

How long do NVQ/SVQs take to complete?

The timescale required to complete an NVQ/SVQ really does depend on which NVQ/SVQ is selected. Also  the capabilities and motivation level of the employee and the amount of support provided by the employer.  As a rough guide you should expect your employee to spend 6-8 months on-programme.  NVQs/SVQs provided by Rewards do not require college day release. The qualification is incorporated into the employee’s daily work duties and is completed within the workplace.  Employers who give their employees time in the workplace to work on their NVQ/SVQ portfolio are more likely to see the positive results and completion of the qualification quicker.  All employees aged 16 or above whether working full-time, part-time or in a voluntary capacity are eligible to complete an NVQ/SVQ.  An NVQ/SVQ can be incorporated into an Apprenticeship qualification if desired.

How much will it cost?

Many employees who are aged 16 or above and are ordinarily resident in the UK will be eligible for some form of funding.  As a leading training provider Rewards has access to numerous work-based learning funding streams and alternate learning routes which means that we have more opportunity to secure external funding to support the development of your team at low/no cost to yourself.  We are more than happy to provide free advice and guidance on funding eligibility for any individual whenever requested.  For some indication of eligibilty rules and funding available please contact us.
